Even though the box art and the character design may lead you to believe that this may be one of those “cute girls being happy and giggly then its over” kind of anime that we have seen gazillion times. Well, it is. At least in first volume that is. But trust me, if you continue to watch the series and get to know the characters better, then this series will grow on you. In fact, between all those silly comedies, there are powerfully emontional scenes that may actually move the audience. I did, and I am not the type who normally get moved by anime, or any type of films. Character development has been seriously lacking in anime these days, but Battle Atheletes is one of few exceptions. Anyway, if you like anime series, by any means go check it out. It is my favorite since Revolutionary Girl Utena. P.S. I want to mention that this series contains lesbian subtext (it gets more deliberate by the fourth volume). Nothing explicit, but this might bother someone (or interest someone).
“Battle Athletes Victory”, or Daiundokai, is truly an amazing series in disguise. Although the character lineup and artwork point to another “see it for the Half Naked Girls” type series, the story is actually quite deep and the character developement is one of the best I’ve seen. Laugh, cry, and cheer these very human stars as they develope their own personalities and traits. The characters are readily identifiable from each other, though the humor may be slightly a bit too politically incorrect. The only flaw with the English Dubbed version involves inadequate voice casting. The english dubbers miss cues, improvise, Over Americanize and even use profanity (there is none in the original script). If you want the best experience the script has to offer, watch the subtitles only, and leave the voices in Japanese, this makes it slightly inconvenient but a much better experience.

This is a wonderful film that will keep the viewer totally absorbed. Written by the tremendously talented David Mamet (The House of Games, Oleanna), it is beautifully directed by the noted director Lee Tamahori (Once Were Warriors, Along Came a Spider). The film is a complex, fully fleshed story covering many themes, fully realized by a stellar cast. It also provides the viewer with breathtaking cinematography, as well as a compelling score written by Academy Award winner Jerry Goldsmith (The Omen).
The film focuses an a mild mannered, self-effacing, slightly paranoid billionaire, Charles Morse (Anthony Hopkins). A brilliant and well-read man with a penchant for esoteric knowledge, Morse is married to Mickey (Elle MacPherson), a young and beautiful, successful model. On location with her in a remote area of Alaska, she is surrounded by her young, fun loving camera crew, while he is seemingly the odd man out. He is astute enough, however, to sense that there are romantic undercurrents between his wife and her photographer, Robert Green (Alec Baldwin).
When Morse accompanies Robert on what was to be a short excursion into the Alaskan wilderness, looking for a local hunter to pose in the photo shoot, disaster looms ahead, and the test for the survival of the fittest begins. It is here that the superior mind and knowledge of Morse is put to the test, as they find themselves pitted against nature. Morse rises to the occasion, emerging as a natural leader, while his younger, fitter rival, Robert, is often at a loss as to how to cope in their peculiar situation. It is also through the emerging and changing conditions that they face, that their respective characters emerge. It is in the wilderness that they are both unmasked and emerge as their true selves.
This is a film that will keep the viewer enthralled. Anthony Hopkins has never been better as the quietly heroic Morse, and Alec Baldwin is excellent as the craven and duplicitous photographer who has cuckolded him. Elle MacPherson is luminous as the beautiful, young, trophy wife. The rest of the supporting cast, including the giant Kodiac bear, are also terrific. This is a superlative survival story that has something for everyone. Bravo!
The score, photography, direction, screenplay and the marvelous interaction between Alec Baldwin and Anthony Hopkins all deserve high praise. It says much for the power of Baldwin and Hopkin’s performances that the magnificent bear, Big Bart, did not steal every scene in which he appeared.
Billionaire intellectual, mildly paranoid Hopkins accompanies his trophy wife played by super model Elle MacPherson to a photo shoot in the Alaskan wilderness. The always faintly menacing Alec Baldwin is a trendy, sophisticated fashion photographer who has more than a passing interest in Ms. MacPherson. Hopkins reluctantly agrees to accompany Baldwin on a search for an elusive native trapper who Baldwin thinks will be an ideal photo subject. The plane goes down (in a jarringly effective scene). Three survive, but on their first night the weakest of their party is horrifyingly mauled and taken away by a giant Kodiak bear. Baldwin and Hopkins must make their way out of the wilderness with the terrifying knowledge that the bear is stalking them. Hopkins is a wonderfully effective survivor and Baldwin shows a toughness and perseverance that belies his sophisticated image. Will the bear triumph? Will they get out alive? Are Baldwin and Hopkins ultimately partners or deadly adversaries?
Thanks to David Mamet, the screenplay has depth and is probably full of deeper meanings that whizzed right by me. Lee Tamahori’s fine direction lifted the film from a merely grand adventure saga to an absorbing study of two men and their inner beings. The script or the interactions never bored me. There is one fine scene setup that alone was worth the price of admission to me. Hopkins and Baldwin are peering over a fallen log desperately trying to ascertain the location of the bear. Only their upper faces are showing. Hopkins china blue eyes display enormous depth and intelligence while Baldwin’s icy blues convey complete kill or be killed intensity. I think reviewers have been unjust to Ms. MacPherson’s contribution. I believe she delivered just what she was supposed to: a beauty who was graceful, charming and perhaps a little shallow.
This film is about as perfect as it can be. The only flaw is a very disappointing DVD with no extras. Hopefully, another edition will come out. Anthony Hopkins is always marvelously articulate about his roles; it would be a treat to hear a few words from him. Outtakes on Big Bart’s scenes would be priceless. I advise waiting for new edition before purchasing the DVD, but by all means, rent this one! In spite of its totally unimaginative title, it is one of the great films of the decade.

Steven Moffat’s writing, combined with James Nesbitt’s extraordinary performance has me hiding behind the sofa–but in a good way!

Rather than rehashing all the old films that came before, Moffat took the “What if…” route–what if there was a Jekyll/Hyde combo running about *today?* His answer is a stylish, intelligent, scary, wickedly funny, and just plain wicked storytelling at its best.
The script is lean and mean, every line has a purpose, and one is not just invited, but compelled to try to anticipate what’s going to happen next. This is suspense in its purest form, and there is always a solid payoff.

Certain tastes, raised on fizzy diet soft drinks, are not going to react well to their first pint of Guinness. As a writer myself, I am blown away by Moffat’s handling of the material.
We are not presented with the same old “don’t mess with this stuff” cautionary tale so much as invited along to truly see the world through Hyde’s eyes. He’s a fun fellow, honestly puzzled by some things and the absolute master of others. He is able to hone life down to its basics and enjoy himself and his carnal nature, yet Nesbitt makes this humorous as well as frightening. This is the true definition of horror in that we are repelled but at the same time attracted.
Did I mention intelligent scripting? That also goes for the direction, production, and a very well-picked supporting cast, able to keep up with the perfectly chosen Nesbitt.
His Jekyll (Dr. Jackman) is as solid and interesting as his devilish Hyde. So far as this fan of classic horror is concerned he now owns the character, and someone dang-well better give him some kind of an award for his outstanding work. It can’t have been easy, yet he makes it look so. Wow.
There is close attention to detail in this series that one needs multiple watchings to pick out everything. In-jokes related to Stevenson’s original story tickled my literary palate, such as Dr. Jackman’s twin boys being named Henry and Edward. There’s more, but I’m not spoiling them for you.
It is by perfectly executed turns funny, sharp, and bloody scary and for this jaded viewer, wholly engaging. I can’t recommend it enough!
Tour de force performance by James Nesbitt (Murphy’s Law, Cold Feet) in the dual role as Tom Jackman/Mr. Hyde coupled with great twists courtesy of writer Steven Moffat make this one hell of a ride!

The story of Ms. Honda and the strange family that adopts her is my number one anime of all, and I have now seen about a hundred of the things. From the sweet opening song through the sweet closing song, it’s pure joy.

This isn’t to mean it’s saccharine. Lots of conflicts occur. You’ll laugh a lot, and you might cry a bit. The operative word is “charming”. If you are not charmed by this series, you have no heart at all. Hitler would laugh and cry with their adventures.
The odd conceit is that the family has thirteen members who turn into the animals of the Chinese zodiac (you know, year of the rat, and stuff, with the cat added to the normal 12). They adopt a plucky girl who has been orphaned.

Honest, if you don’t find this worth the money, send me a letter, and I’ll make it up to you. This is easily the most charming anime ever created.
This is the most heart-warming and touching anime series I’ve ever seen. It’s shoujo, meaning it’s geared towards girls but anyone would enjoy watching this. There are no gun or sword battles, transforming robots, or flying demons but even my teenage son loves it because of all the funny and outrageous characters (our favorites are Shigure, Kyo, Momiji & Ayame).
You meet and get to know the cursed Sohma family through the eyes of orphaned high-school student Tohru Honda. Everyone has a story to tell, some quite heart-wrenching. I was touched by all their stories. Heck, I even felt sorry for Akito!
Although I prefer to watch anime in their original Japanese, I think that Funimation did a SUPERLATIVE job of dubbing and translating these series. In my opinion all the American voice actors were excellent! I really liked Laura Bailey as Tohru but my hat goes off to John Burgmeier who was just AWESOME as Shigure!
Only 26 episodes long, it ends a little too soon. Nevertheless, this is a worthwhile investment. BUY this and add an excellent anime series to your collection!

Please stop whining about this DVD’s aspect ratio. It’s not “full-screen.” It’s widescreen with the original top and bottom sections restored.
According to film historian David P. Hayes, THE STING was filmed in 4:3 (equivalent to “full-screen”) ratio because director George Roy Hill wanted it to look like an old movie. The studio (and/or the exhibitors) apparently had second thoughts about it, though, so theatrically-released prints had the top and bottom sections blocked (”matted”) to fit the widescreen format.
What you see on this DVD is not “pan and scan” (with missing left and right content), but the original format with the top and bottom restored.

I just bought this DVD for my father because this movie IS a classic, no matter what anyone says. But, when it came in the mail, I was surprised to see “Full Screen” on the front of the box. So I did what many of you did NOT do (with the exception of reviewer cammonro dated Sept 2, 2003), I went to the Universal web site and emailed their Home Entertainment division.

One process used in creating movies for theatrical exhibition is to place ‘mattes’ over the top and bottom of the 35 mm film frame to alter the aspect ratio to 1.85:1 ‘Widescreen.’ To avoid black letterboxing bars on the top and bottom of the picture when it is displayed on standard television, the original mattes are removed in a process known as ‘Open Matte.’ (This is not to be confused with ‘Pan & Scan,’ a completely different process of transferring film to Video and DVD.) ‘Open Matte’ was used with in the production of ‘The Sting.’
SO THERE YOU HAVE IT. For all of you complaining about how this DVD is PAN-AND-SCAN, you are WRONG. And for all of you still waiting for WIDESCREEN, you ALREADY HAVE IT with this DVD if you understand what Universal is saying above; you are actually seeing MORE than what you’d see in the theater version because of the “Open Matte” process Universal used, NOT pan-and-scan.
If anyone begs to differ with these facts, argue with the source, Universal.

`The Cave of the Yellow Dog” released in ‘05 is a remarkably unique and fascinating journey into the landscape and soulscape of a real life Mongolian family. Join Nansal and her younger sister, little brother and parents on their neverending nomadic journey as the quide their flock of sheep from one grazing field to the next.
The film chronicles the daily activities of a solitary nomadic family trying to survive the elements, packs of wolves and vultures while trying to raise three small children. The story centers on the oldest child, Nansal. Nansal is approximately eight or nine years and lives with relatives in the city most of the year so she can attend school. Now that summer has arrived she has returned to her family where she resumes her old way of life. She helps with the sheep, collects dung and watches over her younger siblings. On one dung collecting expedition she finds a dog and forms an immediate bond with the animal. She names her new playmate Konchar and brings him home. Her parents reaction to their new guest is mixed and the question arises; is the dog a hindrance that will attract wolves into their camp, or was it sent by fate for some undisclosed purpose. It is here that the concept of reincarnation delicately weaves its thread through the storyline. This one is not for everyone. Most people will probably not only have trouble with its length, but its style, as well. Both as wild as it is imaginative, Christmas Tale is like a post-modern jazz score, mixing elements from a variety of cinematic styles that are jarring (at times), but always interesting to behold. As long as the film is, it always keeps moving and changing before our very eyes. What makes its odd stylistic combinations work is the compelling depths of its explorations into family and the bonds the unite, or divide us. Like and The Royal Tennenbaums, with a nouvelle vague twist, the film is not only full of odd combinations of image and music, but seems to jump from one film to another from scene to scene, as if each character or emotional quality (from light comedy to serious drama) were each receiving its own rendering. At times, the characters turn and speak directly to the camera. The filmmaker also intercedes by providing chapter headings and keyhole views, but, somehow, what could have become a cacophony of chaos, turns into a wonderment of cinema that any real cinephile will be amazed to behold and want to experience again….

Mindbender - After visiting the circus, Jean starts acting strangely and disappears. The X-men find out that she’s being controlled by a mysterious man named Mesmero, and collecting artifacts for him, but when Jean isn’t enough, Mesmero decides that the only way to get the rest of what he needs is to control more of the X-men!

All great, the last episode has the first reference in the series to Apocalypse, the villain featured in the series finale, so, in a way, this DVD is the beginning of the end for the X-men.

I had never heard of this documentary until I first viewed it on THE HISTORY CHANNEL. Initially I thought it was some “action adventure” fiction type. It did not take long to figure out this was a real event that changed the history of the world: was responsible for kicking the Soviets out of Afghanistan and led to the demise of the Soviet Union.

What is so amazing is that one “on the wild side” U.S. senator and one “shunned/rouge” CIA agent was responsible for all of this. They did not just sit behind some desk either! They were on their own. Of course that is until near the very end when the CIA wanted some of the glory too.
This is a documentary you do not want to miss! The Hollywood version, “Charlie Wilson’s War” staring Tom Hanks is; I’m sure a good movie but in no way can portray the real life events of of Charlie Wilson and CIA agent Gust Avrakotos.

I am a lawyer and actually knew Charlie Wilson from his first term in Congress–he appointed me an intern in his Washington office in 1974. I used a 4-minute clip from this movie of his explaining how he got into politics (a neighbor poisoned Charlie’s dog when he was 13, and he skillfully organized constituents to vote the guy out of office by 16 votes) in a guest lecture I gave to a college government class on local politics. It was a big hit with the students. The movie is much more interesting than the Hollywood film starring Tom Hanks (even though Hanks does a great job) because it shows the real people and events, not actors and graphics.

that’s what you’ll think when you finish this DVD!
It’s a great flick! If you’ve ever been in a marching band, no matter how long ago, it will bring it right back to you. Now, most of us only dreamed of being in bands the caliber of those featured in drumline. They are the cream….I didn’t catch the names of the REAL marching bands that participated in the movie (the college names are fictional, I believe)…but they were the stars of this particular show.
The filmmakers captured the difficulty and exhuberance of being a part of “one band, one music” and the dedication these young people have to being the best at what they do. The only recognizable actor is intense Orlando Jones, as Mr. Lee…and he is very good at what he does.
The plot is pretty typical…boy who is a little different from the crowd has incredible talent, faces adversity, finds love, finds his way back to his dream. The boy is a newcommer named Nick Cannon, who has a real screen persona. He’s hard not to like. The real star is the music, and the marching, and the in your face color spectacle of being involved in marching band at the college competition level.
For a real feel-good experience, catch Drumline. It’s awesome!
Definitely feeling the effects of the economy and it’s the beginning of a long winter in Chicago. I needed a good movie to get me out of myself and what better way to get away from the doldrums then with some very un-dull drumming.
Devin Miles has just arrived from NYC at Atlanta A&T University with a full drumming scholarship. Used to being a stand-out, he’s not ready to follow bandleader Aaron Lee’s directive to be “One Band, One Sound.” He thinks he’s too good to follow the rules — and he just may be. But, as Dr. Lee tells him, “You’ve got to learn to follow before you can lead.”
Devin clashes with Dr. Lee and with the drumline’s student leader, Sean — who’d been the best drummer until Devin showed up. But Devin has an undeniably rich and creative spirit. Can he fit in without losing his individuality — a question we recognize from real life. When does compromising have benefits and when not? Despite Devin’s cockiness, he’s a very likable guy and wanting to know how he resolves this issue carried me easily through this two hour movie.
Orlando Jones also makes the movie fly. As Dr. Lee, he’s the personification of principled decency — in fact, he’s awesome and will totally make you forget those 7 Up commercials. In the beginning, a rival bandleader alleges that Dr. Lee has a baton stuck up his … well, you don’t hear it, but he probably didn’t say “bass.” But, as the story progresses, Dr. Lee reveals himself to be an interesting and complex personality who, despite a propensity for “old time music”, does indeed know how to make his band pop. (And, in the end, he comes up with a stylistic triumph that evokes more than those “old time” tunes.)
Devin’s ups and downs are somewhat predictable, but this is one of those movies with a feel-good factor that made me happy to overlook that completely. The music and moves electrify. Nothing could have peeled me from my seat during the story’s culmination in the BET marching band championship. I had to remind myself that I was in a movie theater to keep from cheering from our “stadium” seating. Although the movie is rated PG-13, it’s appropriate for most ages. I don’t recall any cursing, Devin’s scenes with his girlfriend are very chaste and there’s a brief scene of non-graphic fisticuffs. If you’re a fan of percussion, you’ll really love this movie. But even if not, and you’re just looking for a seasonal up-lift, well, it can’t be … beat.
